Create Your Inspiration

When I began carving ‘True Calling’ I was thinking a lot about inspiration, and motivation and how to keep myself motivated and passionate in my daily life. I really do enjoy creating art but like anything, you still have to find ways to keep yourself interested, motivated and INSPIRED.

So this piece ‘True Calling’ is also really about finding or creating your inspiration for yourself and your life, because even for me as an artist, and doing something I am passionate about, Inspiration is never a given and is something I have to cultivate within myself, often on a daily basis.

A Synthesis of My Craft

One of the first rules I gave myself as I began this carving is that I wasn’t going to track how many hours it took me, but simply to allow myself to take as much time as I needed to create something I was fully satisfied with and that would be an synthesis of everything I have been learning about soapstone and carving up to this point.

Some carvings are more about exploration, some are about focusing on and practicing a particular technique and some are about bringing everything together to create a piece that is a synthesis of my skill, understanding, and ability as an artist. True Calling was one of these pieces. 

Deeper Meaning

The call of the wolf to me is a sound that reaches deep into and emerges from the belly of the earth. It is a symbol for that deeper connection we as human beings including myself endeavour to cultivate within ourselves and our lives. This is the same connection I aim to make visible in my artwork to help facilitate a living expression of meaningful and fulfilling experiences and support that really matter.

A Window To The Soul.

I project the moments of my life onto the artwork I am creating and in turn the artwork then becomes a place for reflection of those moments, a unique mirror that reflects back to me, myself, my life and my ponderings so that I can see it from a new or different angle. A carving of a bear reflects my life back to me differently than a carving of a wolf, yet they are both windows for me see into myself and gain new understanding.

This is likely true for the collector as well who has a myriad of different kinds of artwork in their collection, each one specific in reflecting back to the collector a unique part of themselves, their personality and their life.

♦ ‘True Calling’ is carved out of Brazilian Soapstone. A stone prized for its brilliant, diverse and unique color patterns.

♦ I selected this particular stone for this wolf design firstly because of the overall shape and height of the stone which allowed me to include a base in the overall design.

♦ The base is decorative and functional as it provides an anchor for the 4 legs of the wolf giving structural integrity to the overall design of the piece.

♦ I also selected this stone because in my experience Brazilian soapstone typically has less fracturing and a more uniform consistency. This, along with a dense composition, allows for a finer execution of detail which is a key feature of this piece.

The Artist

Andrew Gable is a contemporary Canadian fine artist known prominently for his highly detailed and expressive wildlife stone carvings. He received his degree in fine art with a major in drawing from Alberta University of the Arts in 2004. Outside of sculpture, he is also recognized for his talent in painting and drawing. His original sculptures have been highly collected and can be found in private collections around the world. He currently works out of his studio in Squamish, BC, Canada, and is represented by Mountain Galleries, one of Canada’s premier fine art galleries.

I have been fortunate as an artist to have a high sales rate. I have had pieces sell in the first month I make them available, sometimes they take upwards of a year to sell. I have even had pieces sell within the first week or even days of releasing them. As an artist this is always a nice moment. Eventually they all sell. I have realized the KEY is simply to connect the piece with the right person. Each artwork I create is specific and unique and so are the people that buy them. I never want to sell my work to people who don't want it. I have realized over the years you cannot force a sale. When the right collector aligns with the piece, it sells. Are you that person?
